What Readers are Saying about THE CANKER DEATH
---Wow, very captivating and enjoyable! I couldn't stop reading as the mystery deepened with each chapter. The journeys to other worlds were painted with images of creatures and societies that were vivid and imaginative. They were almost dream-like, having a quality both foreign and familiar. And the constant blending and shifting of the narrative as the story progressed was mesmerizing, like listening to William Gibson channel Robert Heinlein while Dashiell Hammett wrote it down.
I'm really looking forward to more novels from this promising author. (Kent, Amazon Review)
---The Canker Death by James R. Bottino is a mystery, a spiritual awakening, a suspenseful and funny book with complex characters and worlds. This book reminds me a bit of Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber series and also reminds me that good ideas are still out there amidst the plethora of over-worked, tired concepts prevalent in our world today.
How did the author slip in symbolism and deep themes all the while entertaining us with the "full monty" of sex, drugs, rock 'n roll and stuff that explodes? I'm not sure, but by the time I'd finished The Canker Death, it made me laugh, cry, hang on by the seat of my pants, and shout "SEQUEL!!!" (although the book does stand well on its own.)
Also, while reading, I found the Vitruvian Man map full of symbols, character names and concepts to be a provocative and neat little extra feature. I highly recommend this original tome! (RIBH, Amazon Review)
---The Canker Death by James R. Bottino is a spell-binding ride through realities that leaves you breathless and eagerly anticipating the next chapter. The author delivers fantastical yet believable worlds that remind me of J.R.R. Tolkien's or Anne McCaffrey's descriptive universes in that they are complete with a sense of their own histories, customs, taboos and social structures.
This book is funny, sexy, and dynamic. It offers something for everyone, whether you just want a good time or want to delve deeper--it's all in there! (Gypsy, Smashwords Review)
---An adult fantasy evocative of the Phillip Pullman Golden Compass series blending fantasy and science fiction. The characters will captivate you, the story will pull you in, you will not be able to put this book down. (Allyson, Amazon Review)
---As a techie, this book spoke to me from the moment I started reading it. I tend to read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy. However, any time technical information is referenced in typical books like that, the details are often somewhat inaccurate, or ridiculously wrong. The Canker Death was a refreshing change of pace in that regard! All technical references proved to be very accurate.
The story itself was amazingly compelling. I found myself unable to put the book down on numerous occasions. I tend to read about 1-2 hours per day. While reading this book, I found myself regularly reading twice that amount. I was constantly feeling the need to pick up the book and see what was going to happen next up until the last page.
I can't wait for any new releases from this author -- I have not encountered an author in some time that has gripped my attention so intently. This was my far the most enjoyable book I've read in many, many years! (Chris, Amazon Review)
---As the line between art and technology becomes ever more blurred, James Bottino has proven himself as an author for our times. Whether it is his spot-on descriptions of networking and system cracking, or his references and inspirations to classical literature, James knows his stuff. The Canker Death can be enjoyed on many levels, and is challenging to classify. Is it literary fiction, or a science fantasy? The simple answer is both. The Canker Death is exciting and fast moving, a real page-turner. I hope to see more from James Bottino in the future! (Amazon Review)
---Great read, fast paced, filled with very memorable characters. Be warned... this book will definitely deprive you of some sleep, as you will not be able to put it down once you start reading.
To me the book was an excellent cross between a good science fiction and an engaging detective story, that keeps you biting on your fingernails all the time when trying to figure out what will happen next, trying to solve the riddle, and only towards the end starts to reveal its secrets.
I highly recommend it! (Art, Amazon Review)
---The Canker Death is a fantastic and mysterious journey of self-discovery for the main character, a seemingly average system administrator (as a techie, I could relate). As the story unfolds the mystery surrounding the main character deepens, and the farther I got into the story, the harder it was for me to put it down. I found myself thinking about the story throughout the day, and I started taking the opportunity to read it on my phone whenever I could grab a few minutes. A great read! (Dr. Phil, Amazon Review)
---This is a challenging book that jumps back and forth from the utterly fantastic to hauntingly surreal. Two aspects are particularly compelling, first is the author's description of a work-a-day System Administrator. I've been one myself and I can state unequivocally that this one is spot on. The character is believable right down to his analysis and use of profanity. The other outstanding aspect of the book is the descriptions of the alien worlds and intelligent creatures that inhabit them. Here, we encounter worlds that are described with great detail, but which almost defy description. That's a challenge to any author and Jim Bottino steps up to it. A book for Science Fiction fans and for literature buffs. A rare and compelling combination. (Doug Pratt, Amazon Review)
